WHAT: Sugar Pine 7 is an American web series created by Steven Suptic featuring himself, Clayton "Cib" James, James DeAngelis, Parker Coppins, and Autumn Farrell, who also served as its editor.
HOW: In late 2020, as school began to resume under the ill-advised mantra of "back to normalcy," a certain mobile game began to dominate the hearts and minds of people, nay, gamers, everwhere: Among Us. I resisted at first, which I have come to regret, but by December of 2020, I had caught Among Us fever. I started playing, but I had no idea how to win a game. So, I turned to the YouTube search bar and typed: among us tips. Once my YouTube algorithm was thoroughly decimated, I returned to my typical fare of warrior cats adjacent animation, Pokemon VGC battling, and long-form video essays, but this was not the case for long. No, now that the site knew I was a certified gamer, it began reccomending me Among Us videos, specifically those from 5up, a then faceless Twitch streamer. 5up's videos were typically edited down streams, and I worked my way through them like popcorn. Of the personalities that frequented his videos, I began to hold a special fondness for some over others (cough, cough, not XQC, cough, cough), specifically the group that would come to be known as the Morning Lobby. Hafu, Dakotaz, Dumbdog, XChocobars, TinaKitten, Plushys, and more! But a certain red crewmate made me laugh like no other, and soon my search history was embarassingly full of Steve Suptic Among Us videos, edited by the kind people of YouTube. Steve Suptic's Twitch streams, a then daily occurance, were a welcome break from the monotony and depression online school brought me. At 10:30, I would save my Photoshop files, lower the volume on my Zoom call, and pull up twitch.tv/SteveSuptic. The routine was familiar and comforting to me: an instrumental opening song, some clip viewing and Starbucks ordering, jokingly berating chat and the Goderators, the Geoguessr daily challenge, the crossword with Dumbdog, maybe a bit of music or sp7 talk if I was lucky, and then the main course. Over time, as Among Us began to die, there were fewer days where the game du jour was Among Us, though I loved those days the most. But Pico Park, Fall Guys, Valorant, just about anything but Minecraft or Garfield Kart, it was all great in my eyes. However, how did this bring me to Sugar Pine 7? Well, for one, the Streamy Award graphic stationed neatly at the bottom of Steve's facecam intrigued me. I knew the guy hadn't been streaming since 2017, he didn't (and still doesn't) have BTTV emotes. Then, a breakthrough. "Plushys Reacts to Steve Winning a Streamy" came up on the merciful YouTube reccomended video section. Of course, I click. And a world was opened. What was this weird webseries where Steve narrated? What was up with this yellow font? Is this a vlog? So many questions did I have, and so, with the reccomendation of a friend, I jumped in. And here I am to this day.
